Jake Tarlow, a former Hollywood player who's hit the skids, lives in his car and is in deep with Momo, his bookie. Momo is just about to "impound" Jake's car when Will, a hard-ass deal maker still in the game, calls offering Jake sweet manna from heaven. Steinmetz, a huge director, wants to make a movie out of a book written by reclusive author Hunter Burnell, a distant acquaintance of Jake's. All Jake has to do is find Hunter and get him to a meeting with Steinmetz and the payoff will be big. Jake takes his friend Eddie, (a book collector obsessed with the Black Dahlia) along for the ride as the two men inadvertently treat Hunter to the last great time of his life.
