THE MAIDS, by Jean Genet, is the story of two sisters, domestic workers in a wealthy home, who escape the drudgery of their daily lives by engaging in secret role-playing games of dominance and revenge. When an impulsive prank inspired by the game has unforeseen ramifications, the sisters face grim consequences as their transgression threatens to be uncovered. Driven towards madness in a desperate attempt to save themselves, the line between fantasy and reality blurs as judgement approaches.
