The Planets
"The Planets"
Almost 100 years ago, British composer Gustav Holst became friends with the astrologer Clifford Bax who introduced Holst to the concepts of astrology. He quickly rediscovered his childhood intrigue with theosophy, and used the ideas written in Alan Leo's "The Art of Synthesis," which is divided into chapters for each planet, and describes their astrological characteristics. The Portland Gay Symphonic Band will hold a rare performance of this monumental work, as transcribed for wind band. Please come explore the musical ideas of the Roman Deities as perceived by the famous Gustav Holst. This work will be presented along side with Antonin Dvorak's "Serenade for Winds op.44," Hindemith's "March from Symphonic Metamorphosis," and the beautiful and timeless chorale "Salvation is Created" by Pavel Tchesnokov. This performance will be presented on Saturday, May 22nd, 2010, 8pm at Evans Auditorium on the Lewis & Clark College Campus located at 615 SW Palatine Rd, Portland, OR. Tickets are $12 in advance through our website: www.PortlandGaySymphonicBand.org Tickets at the door are $15 adults, $12 students/seniors, cash only. Portland Gay Symphonic Band is a part of Rose City Gay Freedom Band a (501(c)3 organization)
