GLORY GLORY begins in England in 1415, when Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe of Lynn, the two earliest known women authors to write in English, met. But GLORY GLORY, like Julian and Margery's books, twists through history and memory with the dizzying torque that comes from close contact with divinity: both authors claim to have seen, spoken with, smelled, and (in Margery's case) married Jesus Christ.
After her visions, Julian locked herself into a small room and stayed inside it for her entire life, endlessly breaking her memories of Jesus into precisely numbered patterns. After hers, Margery toured Europe, publicly and loudly weeping for her many followers' sins, exhorting them to live in worshipful chastity, even as her frustrated husband pressured her into fourteen pregnancies. To rise to glory, both women had to rely on error-prone priestly scribes in order to circulate truths that would not stay put, in a suspicious England where preaching the wrong things could get a girl burned.
A frenetic, thoughtful, and often hilarious physical theatre production, GLORY GLORY draws its dialogue, movement, images, and haunting poetry from Julian and Margery's Middle English prose, to explore what these women had to learn from each other about writing, belief, and strength. And the role of Jesus will be played by a different audience volunteer each night (to volunteer, visit frontlinetheatre.org).
GLORY GLORY is part of the In Performance Series at the Fort Mason Center, which is supported by Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
