FleaBitten! Good Buys Gone Bad
Have you ever been to a flea market? Not those weekend, temporary things, but permanent ones that sell everything from home paternity tests to autographed pictures of Jesus? Where the wine doesn't breatheit gasps?
FleaBitten is a romp through what used to be called a thieves-and-fleas market. Inside, audiences meet Cap'n Baldrick who financed his booth called Golden Bud's with golden buds. There's Good Time Charlie, a blues guy who is so broke, when he couldn't afford an operation, he had his doctor photoshop his x-rays. And hairdresser/wigmaker Earline promises all her wigs are locally grown, as she's swept up every stand herself. Flea markets are houses of haggle and confabs of the counterfeit, and FleaBitten exploits those. But the show also explores the heart and hopefulness required to work in such a setting.
Perpetually rejected in the real world (her husband threw her out for bringing home one too many strays: a homeless mime), free-spirit Ariel found a home at the flea market. And Pedro and Anita secured love, riches and green cards there.
The Naples Daily News calls FleaBitten "brilliantly written" and says "laughs are plentiful and free." Florida Weekly gushes that it's "brilliant buffoonery." Actual flea market vendors have roared, and then looked around with chagrin, as they recognized themselves.
Whether you visit flea markets or not, FleaBitten shows the sordid, silly and sometimes sociopathic side beneath the bargains.
