The Movies on Exchange Portland, ME
Saturday, March 24, 2007 The Movies on Exchange 7:30 pm
Second screening at 9:30 pm
THE FIRST TIME I WAS 20 Directed by Lorraine Levy. France, 2004, 97 min., French with English subtitles.
It's the 1960s in suburban Paris, and sixteen year- old Hannah (up-and-coming French film actress, Marilou Berry) is the ugly duckling of her loving, yet stifling, Jewish family. Hannah's big dream is to be selected as the double bass player for her school's all-male jazz band. But Hannah's real troubles begin when her dream comes true, as her male bandmates will stop at nothing to make her life miserable. Infused with humor, and a fantastic jazz soundtrack, Lorraine Levy's directorial debut will leave you cheering for Hannah, a classic underdog who uses equal doses of ingenuity and wit to outsmart those who would like to see her fail.
