51 BIRCH STREET: 2007 MAINE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL
Thursday, March 22, 2007 The Movies on Exchange 7:45 pm
51 BIRCH STREET Directed by Doug Block. US, 2006, 88 min., English.
Filmmaker Doug Block had every reason to believe that his parents' 54-year marriage was a good one. But after his mother dies, he is shocked when his father announces that he's marrying "Kitty," his secretary of forty years ago, and moving to Florida. Hailed as one of the best films of 2006 by A.O. Scott from The New York Times, Block's deeply human film offers a reflection of middle class Jewish family life during the 1960s and 70s. He uses candid family interviews, home movies, and even his mother's diary entries to excavate the mystery of his parents' marriage and leaves us with the question: Do we really want to know our parents?
