SB 1193 San Mateo County Community Day of Action
San Mateo County's Community Day of Action Anti-trafficking Poster Campaign

Human trafficking is a modern form of slavery.  It involves controlling a person through force, fraud, or coercion to exploit the victim for forced labor, sexual exploitation, or both.  California is one of the nation's top four destination states for trafficked persons, and the Bay Area is a particular national hot spot for human trafficking.  Not only is human trafficking modern-day slavery, it is also a multi-billion dollar global epidemic. Victims come from all backgrounds and different ages and they are trafficked in all industries.

Though human trafficking is illegal under Federal and California law, trafficking victims often do not know where to turn to for help and community members may not know where to report suspicious situations. State Senate Bill 1193 & Civil Code Section 52.6 helps the community direct victims to essential services by requiring public and private entities to post anti-trafficking notices that include telephone hotlines to seek help or report unlawful activities.

This new law requires certain businesses and other establishments to post the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline number.  Studies have shown that in other states where similar posting requirements have been enacted, there was an increase in the number of reported trafficking situations and rescues of victims.  Businesses can help free victims of trafficking by complying with SB 1193, and the community of San Mateo County can join the Bay Area in the fight against the national criminal enterprise of human trafficking.

We are asking you to join us in raising awareness by visiting mandated businesses in San Mateo County to educate them about their obligation to post a trafficking notice.  We are looking for team leaders and volunteers to help organize their city and inspire others to get involved.  Please register to be a part of San Mateo County's Community Day of Action on SB 1193 taking place on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 2:00PM.

On Saturday, January 10, 2015, we will be assembling at 2:00PM at the San Mateo County Office Building, 455 County Center, Room 101, Redwood City, CA 94063.  There will be an introduction about human trafficking and what the public-at-large can do, then a brief training and orientation, and then you will be assigned to a team of 2 or more volunteers and given a list of mandated bars to visit and to distribute the SB 1193 posters.  Please wear comfortable clothes and good walking shoes, as each team may have to walk about one mile or so to visit businesses on their list.

After registering and closer to the January 10, 2014 date, you will receive an email highlighting the next steps.  For questions and more information, please email Rose Mukhar, the volunteer coordinator for SB 1193, at rmukhar@smcgov.org or call (650) 363-4184.
