| Description |
LGBT FILM PROJECT The Movies on Exchange: Monday March 19, 7:30 pm
PAPER DOLLS Directed by Tomer Heymann Israel, 2006, 84 min., Hebrew, English, and Tagalog with English subtitles.
Documentary filmmaker Tomer Heymann spent five years following the Paper Dolls, a tight-knit group of drag performers who have emigrated from the Philippines to Israel in search of a better life. They make their livings as caretakers to elderly Jews, taking jobs formerly held by Palestinian workers prior to the second Intifada. While the Paper Dolls experience greater personal and sexual freedom in Israel, they are, nevertheless, 'strangers in a strange land'. This touching film explores the relationships the Paper Dolls create with their ailing employers, as well as with each other, while exploring political themes of immigration, racism, and xenophobia.
