Hairspray is not only a great musical but is also a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s. Hairspray with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, is based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray that stared Divine. The songs of the musical include 1960s-style dance music and Motown rhythm and blues. The Musical takes place in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, with the central character being teenager Tracy Turnblad who, though considered too "plumb" to get what other teenage girls do, dreams of dancing on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy does win a role on the show despite the objections of the shows director, she becomes a celebrity overnight meeting a diverse array of characters that change her world and challenges those around her. Brookline High School will present HAIRSPRAY the Musical on Wednesday, February 4 at 3:30pm, Thursday, February 5, Friday, February 6, and Saturday, February 7 at 7:30pm in the Roberts/Dubbs Auditorium Brookline High. Tickets are $5 for students/seniors, $10 adults. All 8th grade students from the Brookline community attend for free.
