TOOTS w/CANTOR ON TRIAL (Yiddish short): SJFF 2007
MOHAI Seattle, WA
MOHAI: WEDNESDAY MARCH 21, 6:30 PM TOOTS Director: Kristi Jacobson US 2006, 85 min, 35mm
Father, brother, gambler, bum. Toots Shor was the towering personality behind the legendary New York City saloon bearing his name. Directed by his granddaughter, Toots is a provocative, loving and unmistakably authentic portrait of the self-made, unapologetic man featuring interviews with Walter Cronkite, Mike Wallace, Frank Gifford and Yogi Berra among others, who called Toots "friend."
Preceded by: CANTOR ON TRIAL (archival Yiddish short) Directed by Sidney M. Goldin Music by Sholem Secunda ("Dona Dona" and "Bei Mir Bistu Shoen") USA 1931, 10 min, Beta; Yiddish w/subtitles
This short gem and precious cultural artifact, features Louis "Leibele" Waldman playing three different parts. A very funny satire of American Jewish identity in flux.
Co-sponsored by Washington State Jewish Historical Society.
Note: Co-sponsor Washington State Jewish Historical Society invites you to join them for a no-host reception and lecture upstairs in MOHAI's McCurdy Gallery after the film. No-host reception is a time for Seattle natives Gina Funes and Doug Glant "reminisce" about their experiences as entertainers in Seattle during a similar time period
