Katarungan: Rooted and Rising
"Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation.
Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace.
If, however, they are left on society's margins, all of us will be impoverished.
Let us ensure that all young people have every opportunity to participate fully in the lives of their societies." ~Kofi Annan

Since we first opened our doors over 37 years ago, Filipino Advocates for Justice (formerly Filipinos for Affirmative Action) holds the welfare of young people at the core of our work.

While we may have a new name, our organization remains rooted in our history and in the struggle for social justice in our community. This year we dedicate our annual event Katarungan: Rooted and Rising to honor the work and recent victories of our youth and youth organizers who continue to build the Filipino American movement with new energy, resilience and inspiring leadership.

We invite you to attend and/or sponsor our event and celebrate with us on Thursday, May 13, 2010 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.

This past year despite a tough economic climate and increasing challenges to funding overall, our youth programs witnessed several encouraging victories.  Our young leaders have:
Successfully defended Oakland's Measure OO assuring that 10% of the city's budget will be dedicated to youth programming throughout the city;
Ensured that youth perspectives and opinions guide the establishment of Union City's new Youth and Family Services Program;
Educated 140 youth about obesity and its relationship to chronic illnesses in the Filipino community;
Surveyed 300 Filipino Union City residents about their health status and access to healthcare, and
Developed leadership and organizing skills for the future well being of the community!

These accomplishments became possible because supporters like you who have graciously funded our work in the past.  Thank You!

Along with celebrating youth organizing victories, we are also proud to honor five emerging young leaders in our community, many of them, previous alumni of our programs:
Rachel Aceberos, Community Outreach Coordinator, San Jose's Second Harvest Food Bank, Public Allies program; former youth from Building Adults Through Awareness (BATA) group, PYC member, now our most dedicated, most recognizable volunteer.
Daniel Banatao, for his dedicated volunteerism throughout the 2008 elections where he energized youth volunteers (many not old enough to vote themselves), who embraced him as mentor, making victories such as Measure OO and Measure UU possible.
Eden Jacinto, Educator, Eastside Arts Alliance and Oakland Unified School District. An artist and leader bridging art with activism to empower and unite youth of all ethnic backgrounds. Co-founder of the Engaging Education student-initiated outreach and retention center at UCSC.
Dexter Ligot-Gordon, SF Mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development and co-founder of KAYA, Filipino Americans for Progress, a national, tech-savvy grassroots organization founded to politically empower the Filipino American Community.
Armael Malinis, AYPAL Campaign Coordinator and Chair of Anakbayan East Bay. Former UFCW organizer. Recognized for his work developing youth leadership to fight social inequities in the U.S., address the eco-crisis and advance the movement for national democracy in the Philippines.

These young leaders have worked tirelessly in their fields, volunteering much of their spare time to build coalitions, engage and educate other young people, and bring issues important to Filipino youth to the forefront. They have worked to mobilize our community to take action, to use their vote and ensure that our community is not left out of major decision-making processes.

Through their leadership, they have inspired young and old alike, to become agents of change. We honor them for their hard work and continuing commitment to justice.

We hope you will join us in celebrating our youth leaders and the amazing organizing that is taking place.  As part of the festivities, we will feature a number of local up and coming youth performers including vocalists, musicians, dancers and even a comedian.

Please support Filipino Advocates for Justice as we aim to raise $35,000 by purchasing tickets, becoming a sponsor, placing an ad in the program booklet or all of the above.  The deadline for ads and sponsorship is April 23rd, 2010.

Your support will ensure that the development of youth leadership continues.

On behalf of the staff and board of Filipino Advocates for Justice, we THANK YOU for believing in young people as we have since our inception in 1973.  We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, May 13th.

Tickets can be purchased online for youth (under 20) for the special price of $20 and $60 for general admission.
