World Music & Dance of Peace Concert
Vocals, percussion and dance converge in a high-energy collaboration called the World Music & Dance of Peace Concert. In a border-bending mix of music and dance from Middle Eastern, Balkan, African and South American roots, local artists celebrate the differences of each culture and find magic crossovers in rhythm and theme.
The World Music & Dance of Peace Concert, co-sponsored by 4Culture and the Office of Cultural Affairs, features 5 singers, 3 musicians and 2 dancers. The inter-cultural music and dance approach of these artists is the kind of collaboration they believe peace is built upon. The concert is the project of the following groups and individuals:
Abrace vocal/percussion ensemble [5 women singers and a multi-percussionist] that sings in 18 languages including Arabic, Hebrew, Swahili, Ladino, Bulgarian and Portuguese. Lead Singer Samia Panni, born in Bangladesh but raised internationally, is a fine interpreter of Afro-Brazilian music.
The MB Orchestra - Egyptian group featuring Maurice Sadak Rouman, virtuoso oud player and his son George Sadak (percussionist]). Maurice, born and raised in Southern Egypt, spent 40 years performing internationally and on Egyptian T.V.
Helene Ericksen - Internationally recognized researcher, teacher and performer of the dance traditions between North Africa and Central Asia. She tours widely throughout the world. www.helene-eriksen.de
Dora Oliviera - Brazilian dancer. Dora has danced professionally since 1976, when she joined renowned Brazilian folkloric dance troupe, Exaltacao A Bahia.
The Arab-Israeli Peace Song, centerpiece and inspiration for the World Music of Peace Concert, was produced in the Middle East by Palestinian and Israeli musicians as a bold statement of hope and peace. In the same spirit, the Muslim, Jewish and Christian members of this project have come together to celebrate the unifying power of music and dance, break down barriers and open doors of understanding and community.
