Dirty Dan and Other Travesties
Following the sold-out performances of David Yezzi's Chekhovian verse drama "On the Rocks," Verse Theater Manhattan returns to the Bowery Poetry Club to present, one night only, an evening of Yezzi's groundbreaking verse monologues with a cast of New York's most arresting actors.
The monologues look beneath the surface of the everyday world to discover the mysterious currents that guide our lives. The denizens of this off-kilter world -- a wild-eyed short order cook in an all-night diner, a kid who cleans out dead people's apartments, a failed painter with Oedipal problems, a hapless actor in a hilariously cocked-up production of Macbeth and his ex-girlfriend who keeps a troubling secret -- all of them share a sense of life's absurdities (its travesties!) as well as its occasional redemptions.
This series of four dramatic monologues is an unflinching look into the past, where ghosts lurk and dark secrets are harbored. Each black-verse tour-de-force constitutes a reckoning, and the outcomes are always surprising, and surprisingly human.
David Yezzi's books of poetry are The Hidden Model (2003) and Azores (2008, a Slate best book of the year). He is the editor of The Swallow Anthology of New American Poets (2009). His libretto for David Conte's Firebird Motel was issued on CD by Arsis in 2007, and he is currently completing a libretto of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Last Tycoon for composer Cyril Deaconoff and West Bay Opera. Yezzi is an actor and co-founder of the San Francisco theater company Thick Description. He has performed in works by Shakespeare, Shaw, Brecht, Goethe, Williams and others in the United States and Europe. In June 2007, Verse Theater Manhattan produced a workshop reading of his verse drama On the Rocks at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City.
Chris Lee is a musician living in Brooklyn. His recordings include, Chris Lee; Chris Lee Plays & Sings: Torched Songs, Charivari Hymns & Oriki Blue-Marches, and, most recently Cool Rock.
