Encounter with the Sacred: Appreciating and Praying with Icons
*CANCELED*
Are you curious about icons? Do you wonder about the ways they're used and how they fit into Christian life and theology? If you've felt drawn to the beauty and contemplative qualities of icons but know little about them, this class is for you.
See this beautifully illustrated slide presentation and learn about the ancient tradition of icons--their meaning, symbolism, imagery--and how they are used and interacted with in Eastern Christian churches and homes. Discover how you and your spiritual community can integrate icons into your spiritual life. The class will also include instruction in a visual meditation technique that is useful for contemplating icons and other kinds of images.
Presenter: Victoria Scarlett, Director of the Center for Sacred Art, www.centerforsacredart.org As an art educator, art historian, curator, and artist, Victoria has a special interest in reclaiming sacred art as a tool for conscious living, spiritual practice, and building a culture of peace. She has led tours in San Francisco and Seattle museums, and has taught in a variety of settings, including the University of Washington, Evergreen State College, Seattle University, and the Seattle Art Museum--as well as a variety of spirituality centers, churches, and cathedrals throughout the Northwest. Her teaching combines respect for tradition and scholarly integrity with a passion for the transformative possibilities of sacred art for individuals today. Victoria is a graduate of the University of Washington (M.A., Art History); John F. Kennedy University (M.A., Museum Studies); and San Francisco State University (B.A., Studio Art).
