This conference will look to the future. It will be an opportunity to focus on new models, new partnerships and to challenge how we work by being provocative and celebrating the diversity of dance in the UK today.
Each day of the conference is themed and will focus on specific topics:
Thursday evening, The Place: Star studded celebratory opening with keynote speeches from Dame Gillian Lynne and Sir Peter Bazalgette and compered by Arlene Philips CBE. The evening will feature footage of Ed Watson dancing to The Feeling's "Boy Cried Wolf" and a performance of "Ocean", choreographed by Jamaal Burkmar and danced by "Verve".
Friday, The Place / Mayor's Office / Southbank Centre: "Brave New Future: Opportunities for Dance in the Wider World" A look at dance in a wider context with sessions on education, health, fundraising, what digital means for dance, "Brand UK" and touring internationally and a World Cafe session led by Roanne Dods. In the evening National Youth Dance Company returns to Sadler's Wells to premiere Frame[d] created by the 2014-15 Guest Artistic Director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Saturday, Trinity Laban: "Invest, Create, Innovate" The National Dance Network have programmed a day of sessions looking at how ideas grow in the journey to the making of dance. Other sessions include a Healthier Dancer Programme (HDP)strand focused on investing in dancers health and wellbeing as well as looking at career transition and dancers pay. The identity and creativity in a range of artforms will be debated with a specific focus on Ballroom, South Asian Dance, Ballet, African People's Dance and Musical Theatre.
Sunday, Sadler's Wells Theatre: "Emerging Artists: Training, Creativity & Choreography" The National Youth Dance Company and Sadler's Wells host the final day of the conference, which will offer an opportunity to discuss dance training, take inspiration from around the world and focus on the needs of young people as they prepare to be the future of dance. Speakers include Wayne McGregor and Alistair Spalding.
Highlights on the Friday and Saturday include "power hour" - the dance sectors very own "TED-talk" inspired presentations by some of the leading figures in dance and beyond. This is an opportunity to be provoked and for exciting new models of working to take centre stage. On Sunday, there will be short 'power performances' from different groups of young people during the lunch break.
