Your Negro Tour Guide
The Triad New York, NY
Your Negro Tour Guide is a one-woman stage adaptation based largely on columns and commentaries collected in Kathy Y. Wilson's book by the same name. It is rooted in straightening old (black) lies told about "bad hair"; it lampoons the buffoonery of acquiring Euro-centric beauty at the hands of Asian nail shop owners and at the risk of natural black beauty; throws a strobe light on black homophobia, intra-racial bigotry and the ridiculousness of the white gaze forever pathologizing blackness. It is a tone-poem to humankind that allows us, once and for all, to laugh at every secret we've held against and sideways glance we've cast at "The Other".
