The seventh annual San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF) kicks off on May 19 and runs through May 30 with more than 40 performances and two major visual arts exhibits being presented by 32 San Francisco organizations at multiple venues throughout the City. With its annual theme, "The Truth in Knowing/Now: Threads in Time, Place, Culture," SFIAF 2010 will include numerous World Premieres, US Debuts & International Collaborations featuring leading artists from the Bay Area performing and exhibiting with and alongside their international peers from around the world. This year's festival includes dance, music, theatre and visual arts and events will take place at four venues at the Fort Mason Center (the Cowell & Southside Theatres and the Herbst and Festival Pavilions) as well as at Monaghans Bar, Theater Artaud, the Garage, the Herbst Theatre and Union Square.
Al Khareef Theatre Troupe brings its award-winning play to the Bay Area. "The Solitary" is a fascinating piece of theatre that is as simple as it is profound. Situated in a single room it is the story of a political prisoner in solitary confinement and his relationship with his jailer the only person with whom he has any personal contact. From this simple idea Ramez Alaswad and Nawar Bulbul weave a subtle and complex story that mines the nature of power dynamics and personal relationships, evokes political intrigues and, by extension, comments on the growing rifts that exist in many Arab societies through the emergence of highly educated urban populations and governments still run on graft and cronyism.
