A Dream Play, by August Strindberg, newly adapted by Caryl Churchill
In Caryl Churchill's darkly comic and resonant version of August Strindberg's surreal "A Dream Play," a heavenly creature named Agnes comes to earth to experience what it's like to be human and report back to "God, the gods, whatever". This is fantastical dive into the subconcious takes us through a series of tantilizing dreams with vivid characters -- a sort of "David Lynch does Joan of Arc in Wonderland."
As Strindberg said about the play, written in 1901, it imitates "the disjointed yet seemingly logical shape of a dream. Everything can happen, everything is probable and possible. Time and space do not exist." Characters merge into each other, locations change instantly, and a mysterious locked door becomes an obsessively recurrent image.
First produced at the National Theatre, U.K., in February 2005, Edge Theatre Ensemble is delighted to have this opportunity to present Ms. Churchill's version of the play to Seattle audiences. Through movement-based ensemble exploration, Strindberg's ground-breaking experiment is brought to strange and wonderful life.
(Parent advisory: A couple 4-letter words. Bizarre dream imagery. And about 3 seconds of nudity. Use your own discretion.)
