Trip Leader: Larry Crumpler Ph.D. Research Curator of Volcanology and Space Science, NMMNHS
Mount Taylor is a classic composite volcano similar to Mt St Helens or Kilimanjaro. It is the second largest geologically young volcano in New Mexico and the highest point in western NM. We will use forest roads to visit a series of outcrops that show the structure and formation of the volcano as we drive toward the summit. This is an opportunity to visit this little-visited mountain with someone who knows it very well. Dr Crumpler mapped Mount Taylor and is one of the experts on the geology of the mountain.
