OCCITANIA - From Middle Ages to Today
In collaboration with Music on Main
Occitan is a Romance language spoken in southern France, Italy's Occitan Valleys, Monaco, and Catalonia's Val d'Aran: the regions sometimes known unofficially as Occitania. A descendant of the spoken Latin language of the Romans, yet still spoken today, Occitan lives strongly through vocal music and will be explored in this special evening.
Prof. Chantal Phan, from UBC's Dept. of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies, introduces us to the world of troubadour Jaufré Rudel (12th Century). After a short presentation taking us to Medieval Occitania, she performs Rudel's Lanquan li jorn son lonc en mai, a song that inspired contemporary Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's epic piece Lonh, for voice and electronics, sung tonight by soprano Robyn Driedger-Klassen.
An exploration of Occitania wouldn't be complete without an exquisite musical selection from the famous Chants d'Auvergne by Canteloube, interpreted by sopranos Robyn Driedger-Klassen and Lambroula Maria Pappas, and pianists David Bergeron and Laura Loewen.
