Suitcase of Love and Shame
FOR MATURE AUDIENCES: Contains sexually explicit content.
A forbidden love story played out in a decade that would soon spawn the sexual revolution, Suitcase of Love And Shame reconstructs a mesmerizing and erotic narrative from 60 hours of reel-to-reel audiotape discovered in a suitcase purchased on eBay. Recorded in the 1960's, a Midwestern woman and her lover chronicle the details of their adulterous love affair. Part historical documentary and part experimental narrative, the film uses this rare audio example to critically examine a time when it was exceptional to listen to the contradictory words of those who secretly and exuberantly lived a lie while publicly constraining their passion.
In 1964, the couple, Tom and Jeannie, lived in different cities. Long distance phone calls were risky and cost prohibitive, so instead they recorded audio letters, television shows, record albums, and sex tapes for each other. They are heard singing, drinking, laughing, crying, and making love. The recordings are raw, candid, and provocative. The film is rich in the textural sounds of Midwestern thunderstorms, telephones ringing, barking dogs, and Bert Parks announcing the winner of the Miss America Pageant of 1965. Tender and pathetic, dramatic and suspenseful, the tapes include astonishing details of hotel room rendezvous and workplace indiscretions. Suitcase of Love And Shame offers an honest portrayal of the dynamics of an unhappy marriage, the effects of institutionalized sexism, the influence of popular culture, and the impact that new technology portable recording devices had on people's lives. 70 min. Official Selection, Full Frame Documentary Film Festival; Special Screening, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Official Selection, Ann Arbor Film Festival; Official Selection, Visions du Reel, Switzerland.
