Cecelia Ticktin: Wild
Cecelia Ticktin: Wild
The powers that be seem to laugh, intently and relentlessly, in the face of plans. Recently, Singer/Actress Cecelia Ticktin's life has proved to be an experiment in letting go of established plans, as she fearlessly (well, almost) plunged into a new path that seemed to unravel itself before her and a successful experiment, at that. Following years of struggles and achievements, lessons and hard-won triumphs within her own physical rehabilitation, Cecelia embarked on a new journey in the health and fitness profession that has led to a new, beautiful, amazingly rewarding, and successful turn as a personal trainer and injury rehabilitation specialist at Crunch 83rd street. Her newest task has been identifying the connections between optimizing vocal performance and optimizing the function of the human body, using herself as usual as the guinea pig.
This past year has, on all accounts, been a journey into the wild.
Come help Cecelia celebrate 24 years of living, laughing, singing, celebrating, fighting, and growing. There will be songs both familiar and new; covers of songs written by the artists who have inspired and sustained her, such as Karima Francis, Rilo Kiley, and Marc Broussard, and the ever apropos single "Into The Wild," written by L.P.
Cecelia is best known for her cabaret performances around New York City, most notably singing the work of Carner and Gregor (carnerandgregor.com). She has produced, directed, and performed in 5 benefit concerts for The Emily Fund (emilyfund.org), including last year's concert at Drom, where she had the privilege of working with her beloved and revered band for the first time. Cecelia was a finalist in last year's Lotte Lenya Vocal Competition.
Cecelia's band for the evening consists of some of the most sought after musicians in the city. Micha Burgess on guitar, Jerry DeVore on bass, and Joshua Mark Samuels on drums.
Micah Burgess is a versatile guitarist whose credits range from Cirque Du Soleil's "Banana Shpeel," to "Mary Poppins" on Broadway, to "Departure Lounge" at NYC's Public Theater, with too many others to name. As a composer, Micah is currently co-composing the score for "In The Magic of the Green Mountains," a feature length documentary, and he has written music for stage and film. In 2008, Micah released his first CD as a bandleader, "We Do Know You." He is a co-founder and guitar instructor at Art House Astoria, a nonprofit conservatory for music and art in Queens, NY.
Jerry DeVore has been a full-time member of three Symphonic Orchestras; he has used his classical abilities touring with the United States Air Force Heartland of America Band, as well as his jazz abilities touring with that group's jazz big band. Jerry's experience includes performing as a full-time member of an R&B band, called The Confidentials (named by Brides Magazine as one of the top wedding bands in the nation), as well as performing as a soloist with the Dallas Brass accompanied by a full orchestra. He has performed with artists such as Curtis Fuller, Wynton Marsalis, Gladys Knight, and Lenny Pickett to name a few. Jerry is also a talented arranger and composer.
Joshua Mark Samuels's resume is 10 feet long, and includes Broadway shows such as "Jersey Boys," "Nice Work If You Can Get It," "Chaplin," and "Godspell," Off-Broadway shows such as "The Rescignos" and "Carrie," and he is currently on tour with "Anything Goes." Joshua has traveled the world playing drums/percussion, and still finds time to teach youth, as well as to orchestrate and arrange percussion for many prominent composers in NYC.
Additional arrangements for this evening's performance were contributed by Andrew Byrne (www.andrewmbyrne.com), without whom she would be lost and to whom she owes an inexplicable amount of gratitude.
