Learn about the science of your favorite animal by making art! Be inspired by the art in exhibits, sketch from specimens both indoors and out, talk with staff scientists who are artists and fill up your "Museum Sketchbook." Experience art using bottlecaps & clay, collage & printmaking, sculpt, sketch, watercolor and more.
All days are open to children from kindergarten through 5th grade. Classes will meet from 9am-4pm, with lunch around 11:30am-12:15pm. Before care is available from 8 am-9 am and aftercare is available from 4 pm-6pm for an additional fee for each. Choose a one day class or purchase 2 or 3 classes together! Come for all 6 and get a discount! 10% discount for Museum members.
Monday, March 11, 2013 -- Mammals Only mammals have hair! We will learn about muscles, skeletons and hair coverings as we sketch and mold mammals in clay! Get inspired by our Grasslands murals! Tuesday, March 12, 2013 -- Snakes, Lizards and More Amphibians and reptiles have different skin texture and colorings! We will learn about pattern from these experts at camouflage. We will explore different art materials to express the live animals from our Naturalist Center and Bioscience Collections. Wednesday, March 13, 2013 -- Insects and Spiders Insects, spiders and crabs are "joint-footed" with outer exoskeletons! We will learn about arthropod body parts with mirrors that show matching sides called symmetry. Outdoors we will search for where the bugs are and find creative ways to express their shapes and lifestyles through art! Thursday, March 14, 2013 -- Birds Wings, bills and bird feet are fun to draw! Eggs are fun to paint, too! Build a bird in sculpture to understand its special parts! Make a feather pen to sketch birds in their habitat outdoors in Tiguex Park. Kids can choose from different art media and science stations throughout the day. And more!
Friday, March 15, 2013 -- Prehistoric Creatures Fossils tell us about these ancient beings! We will make fossils and skeletons with different materials and watch how the experts create fossil casts. Imagine the habitats where long ago creatures lived through painting and collage. Kids can choose from different art media and science stations throughout the day. And more!
If you wish to purchase any of the 5 days individually,look for a separate Brown Paper Ticket listings. BEFORE CARE AND AFTER CARE You may register for before care and aftercare on Brown Paper Tickets at same time of registration for your class. Or you may take advantage of our before care and aftercare on the day of your class. Member will receive 10% discount for before care or aftercare if preregistering for all 6 classes on Brown Paper Tickets. Before care is available from 8 AM-9 AM for an additional fee of $10. Aftercare is available from 4 PM-6PM for an additional fee of $20. Before and aftercare can be paid by check or cash at the time of drop-off or pick-up. No discount available for member.
YOU NEED TO KNOW All campers must be picked-up by 4:00 PM. Campers still at the Winter Science Program after 4:10 PM will automatically be enrolled in our aftercare program. Payment for aftercare must be made by cash or check at time of camper pick-up. -Our camp instructors are teachers or scientists. They have all completed first aid and CPR. All instructors submit to a background check before teaching camp. -Please note that Museum staff cannot take responsibility for dispensing prescription or over-the-counter medications. -Campers are required to provide their own lunch, snack, and drink. Campers must wear appropriate clothing and shoes for active learning.
The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science reserves the right to cancel any event that does not reach a minimum of 6 participants.
There will be no additional fee when you complete your camp purchase.
