Field Trip -- "Magdalena Astronomy Experience!"
New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science
Albuquerque, NM
Share this event:

Tour a mountain top which will be home to a major astronomical observatory in the future and observe the heavens from a dark-sky location!  The tour will depart from the museum in time to rendezvous with SUVs for transportation to the top of Magdalena Ridge at 1 p.m.  NM Tech researchers and students will lead tours of the 2.4 meter optical telescope and the developing site of an interferometer.  There will also be time for admiring the view and visiting a small gift store (cash only).  For more information, visit this site:  http://www.mro.nmt.edu/

After a trip back down the mountain, a barbeque dinner will be served at the Water Canyon picnic pavilion.  The experience continues into the evening in the town of Magdalena with a visit to a growing display of antique astronomical equipment collected by the Magdalena Astronomical Society.  After it gets dark, youll be transported to a private dark-sky observing site to view the heavens through telescopes.  The group will return to Albuquerque in the late evening.

Please carefully read these precautions: A waiver will need to be signed before departing on the tour.  Magdalena Ridge Observatory is at 10,400 ft., so altitude sickness is a concern.  Touring the observatory requires riding on primitive forest service roads, walking on uneven ground, and climbing several flights of stairs.  The observing site is a wilderness area in total darkness.  Be sure to wear hiking shoes and clothing, bring a light jacket, and a flashlight covered in red cellophane or something similar.  If weather conditions at the top of Magdalena Ridge are too severe on the day of the tour, it may be rescheduled.  If the sky becomes cloudy during the day, the night-sky observing may be canceled.  This will be a long day, with the tour not arriving back in Albuquerque until around midnight or a little later.
