Variations on Love: Brazilian Dance and Music with Girasol Dance and Sambatuque

Beautiful dancers, exotic costumes and the compelling sounds of Brazilian samba will take the stage of the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center on June 29th, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. in "Variations on Love: A Night of Brazilian Dance and Music with Girasol Dance and Sambatuque." With all new dances this year, previous shows were performed in 2003 and 2005 to sold out audiences.
Sambatuque (samba-too-kie) is an exciting quintet fronted by singer Mikaela Romero and performing a vibrant and eclectic blend of music from Brazil. Romero's strikingly pure and rhythmically precise vocal delivery gives listeners the sense that she's they have been transported to Brazil. The band draws upon the rich & subtle beauty of Brazilian harmonies and the powerful rhythms of Brazil, creating a blend that is uplifting & infectious - always bringing Seattle audiences to their feet to dance. The choreographer Janelle Campoverde presents the cast of dancers, Gira Sol performing folkloric and popular dances of Brazil, including samba, samba reggae, maracatu and baiao expressing through dance the songs of the great Brazilian composers. Special guests include Brazilian singer Adriana Giordano and percussionists Caxambu and Vincent Gonzalez.
