Cricket Tell the Weather and Monica Rizzio and Old Kings Highway
CRICKET TELL THE WEATHER

Cricket Tell the Weather is a Brooklyn based string band with its roots deep in the bluegrass tradition, embracing folk, old-time, and spirituals as a backdrop for their original songwriting. Winners of the 2013 FreshGrass Award, Cricket formed in the fall of 2012 and has toured the Northeast, establishing a base throughout the bluegrass and folk festival and concert series circuits. They've been featured at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Del Fest, Ossipee Valley Music Festival, Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, and Strawberry Park Bluegrass Festival. The band has twice been awarded the Neighborhood Arts & Heritage Grant from the City of Bridgeport, and is actively involved in providing bluegrass workshops to students of all ages under their "American Roots Revival" workshop series. In 2014, Cricket released its independent eponymous debut album of original music, recorded at Signature Sounds studio in Pomfret Center, CT. Bringing with them heart, enthusiasm, humor, and an appreciation of tradition, Cricket's voice is personal in a way that stretches against categories, and familiar in a way that honors those who have come before.

Award-winning songwriter Andrea Asprelli (fiddle) came to the east coast from Colorado's front range, and was shaped by local bluegrass communities scattered across Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York, before co-founding Cricket Tell the Weather and setting up shop in Brooklyn, NY. Winner of the 2011 Podunk Songwriting Competition, Andrea teamed up with New York native Doug Goldstein on banjo after meeting at one of the region's bluegrass festivals. Doug's style embraces melodic and traditional bluegrass, as well as influences in old-time, Classical, and a particular interest in Indian traditional music. They are joined by Portland native Jeff Picker, a guitarist and bassist in the Northeast acoustic scene, whose style has found a home with bluegrass, country, swing, bebop, folk, and rockabilly. They are joined by Sam Weber on bass.

Cricket Tell the Weather is: Andrea Asprelli, fiddle; Jeff Picker, guitar; Doug Goldstein, banjo; Sam Weber, bass.

MONICA RIZZIO AND OLD KINGS HIGHWAY

Every now and again you can pick up on the East Texas drawl in Monica Rizzio's voice. Most people assume that she was raised in New England based on the melodic arrangements and harmonies she has produced as the front woman of the New England band Tripping Lily for the past 10 years. Her latest project, Monica Rizzio & Old King's Highway, draws on her Texas roots and bridges Folk, Country, and Bluegrass.

Maybe it was a Guy Clark song or the '56 Martin 0-18  she recently began playing, which has awakened her southern roots into a song not sung before.  Her original song, "Luckier Than You" is an infectious love anthem that makes you feel as if you are singing for the one you love.  A driving guitar solo, drums that you feel in your knees, and a chorus you will sing for days, has made "Luckier Than You" a coming out song for Rizzio.

It was not until recently that Rizzio began focusing on songwriting instead of being just a vocalist.  In the past 18 months, she has written several songs, one which tells the story of a young woman searching for her own voice.  "Falling" is the culmination of all those months, words, tears, and joys.  What starts out as a beautiful piano piece ends in Rizzio reaching for every ounce of pain and happiness that her heart can give her voice.

In 2012, Rizzio released a Holiday album, "All Wrapped Up for the Holidays" which featured Nicki Parrott of the Les Paul Trio and Vinny Raniolo who plays with Frank Vignola.  The album was well received and several of the songs were aired regularly on stations throughout New England and online.

In January of  2014, Monica Rizzio & Old Kings Highway will record her new songs and will begin touring throughout the east coast. She is also an owner of the only Roots based music school on Cape Cod, West Bend Music, located in the newly revitalized Dennisport.

She has defined herself as the most versatile musician on Cape Cod, having performed everything from Folk to Jazz to Americana.  Monica Rizzio & Old King's Highway is the culmination of her journey down the road of musical exploration. No longer is she looking for her place, the girl who grew up on a ranch in Texas has solidified her roots on Cape Cod, and is branching out to roads ahead.
