This unique and comprehensive forum will address barriers to and opportunities for addiction recovery within our criminal justice & educational systems. Nationally recognized speakers will address the scope of the addiction problem in the United States and in Michigan specifically,as well as challenges presented by the criminalization of addiction and substance abuse. Attention will be focused on opportunities to reform the criminal justice system to better provide for treatment and recovery, and on the elimination of barriers to recovery that exist due to the criminal consequences of drug-related offenses. Speakers will also address preventative measures designed to avoid or halt the progression of addiction and substance use in our youth, including the benefits and formation of recovery high schools and collegiate recovery programs. The conference will include a panel discussion with a diverse group of recovering individuals who have experienced criminal consequences due to their addictions, some of whom have participated in collegiate recovery programs and/or specialty court programs.
