May 16

(Frank Capra, United States, 1926, 75 min, 35mm)

35mm film!

Saturday, May 16 at 08:00PM

Frank Capra's feature-length directorial debut is a Prohibition-era romp starring Harry Langdon as Paul Bergot, a Belgian immigrant who falls head over heals for his pen pal, a blind woman named Mary Brown (Priscilla Bonner). Paul travels to the US after fighting in World War One to track down his love, but in a series of comical mishaps, he finds himself up against bootlegger gangsters and at the front of a charge to save Mary's town.

"A whale of a comedy production that has a wealth of slapstick, a rough-and-tumble finish and in the earlier passages bits of pantomimic comedy that are notable. Harry Langdon has a comic method distinct from other film fun makers. The quality of pathos enters into it more fully than the style of any other comedian with the possible exception of Chaplin. His gift of legitimate comedy here has a splendid vehicle."
Variety Magazine, 1926

Tonight's performers are Jen Gilleran (GRID founder, percussionist) and Christian Pincock (trombone, effects). Each GRID performance is different from the last, as Jen Gilleran changes the instrumentation to serve the film, the space in which it is seen, and/or to offer fresh interpretations of the work. Past GRID-scored films have included the works of Maya Deren, Ilya Chaiken, Alan Lomax, Pete Seeger and Mary Ellen Bute at Central Cinema, The Royal Room, The Good Shepherd Chapel and the Racer Cafe. Special ticket pricing: $15 General Admission/$12 for Film Forum Members.
