Two Great Film Festivals Happening This Week!

March 05, 2012 2:30 PM

Happy Monday everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend. Time to start planning your activities for this week.

If you're in or near Los Angeles or Ohama, Nebraska and love independent film, then you're in luck. On Wednesday, March 7 the Omaha Film Festival kicks off and on Thursday, March 8, the Los Angeles Animation Film Festival kicks off.

The Omaha Film Festival was established in 2005 as "a way for the Omaha community to experience the artistry of independent filmmaking through the exhibition of new films by aspiring artists that are otherwise unavailable for viewing in the area." The festival typically screens over sixty films from around the world with a special section for Nebraska-made films. Genres cover narrative features, documentaries, short films and animated shorts and the festival features regional and worldwide premiers as well as advanced screenings of films that have already received wider distribution. The festival has become one of the top teaching festivals in the Central United States and offers a myriad of panels, lectures and workshops for aspiring filmmakers. You can find a full schedule of events here or pick up an All Film Pass here. The festival kicks off on Wednesday, March 7 and runs until Sunday, March 11.

Here's a couple of the featured films that will be screening in Omaha this week.

Wednesday, March 7: Bringing Up Bobby (Director: Famke Janssen. 2011)

Sunday, March 11: Renee (Director: Nathan Frankowski. 2012)

Also kicking off on Wednesday with a FREE (while tickets last) Opening Night Party, is the Los Angeles Animation Festival. This festival aims to help support the animation industry in the United States by helping individuals network and get exposure through competitions. They also hope to expose Los Angeles audiences on to the great animation from the US and beyond.

Musician and only son of John and Yoko Lennon, Sean Lennon, will be serving as the festival's artistic director this year. He'll be presenting some of his favorite films, including the father of all anime films, 1988's "Akira," 1973's beautiful French film and winner of that year's Special Grand Jury Price at Cannes: "Fantastic Planet" and another anime classic from 1988, "Grave of the Fireflies." They got a lot more in store for animation lovers so be sure to pick up your Festival Passes here. Screenings will be taking place from Thursday, March 8 to Sunday, March 11.

Here's a little preview of what they got in store:
