Hot Tickets: Los Angeles

February 27, 2012 12:00 PM

Here are this week's hot tickets in the Los Angeles area. Check back every Monday at noon, PST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

TONIGHT! February 27 (and Wednesday, February 29) | THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967-1975 (2011) & !WOMEN ART REVOLUTION (2010) - A double bill of two recent, critically acclaimed documentaries about two important social, political and artistic movements of the late 60s and early 70s

Thursday, March 1 | BRANDEE BUILT ON CRAZEE -  BRANDEE BUILT ON CRAZEE is a One Woman Show directed by Michael Steger (90210) and Sean Hankinson.  This comedy is loosely based on Brandee Tucker's life. Tucker plays over fifteen characters where she walks the audience through her experiences starting from age six. The audience will go through a journey meeting childhood bullies, a beauty shop guru, relatives with mental illness, an inspiring grandmother and many more characters.

Sunday, March 4 | We Make Movies - Slate one screening! - We Make Movies is dedicated to showcasing a community of filmmakers who are dedicated to making the movie industry not suck. They're proud to present a lineup of shorts that was fully written, developed, cast, crewed, and paid for by their community! Six of their Kickstarter films are split across two screenings, plus additional shorts each night.

Sunday, March 4 | Material Concerns - One of the key concerns of experimental film, in the tradition of all modern art, is the stuff of film itself: how it is made, what is it made of, what are the basic elements of the camera, the celluloid, and the projector. In experimental film, focusing on the materials and procures of film-making has come to be known as structuralist film-making, with a hey-day from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s, but continuing in much work today. These are several classic examples made in Los Angeles, with precise control over the instruments of filmmaking, the depth of good art, and (more often than not) a fair dose of wit.

Sunday, March 4 | Coronado - Coronado is the only play written by mystery writer Dennis Lehane (perhaps best known for the screenplays for Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, and Shutter Island). It is a modern-day Greek tragedy which follows three intertwining tales: a recently freed inmate and his father waging a lethal battle of wits while searching for a missing woman and a stolen diamond; a psychiatrist and his patient having an illicit affair; and a woman and her lover plotting the murder of the woman's husband. Set in a southwestern American town, Coronado is a thriller exploring the dark side of the human spirit and what one is willing to do for love, money and redemption.
