Hot Tickets: San Francisco

February 07, 2012 12:00 PM
Every Tuesday at noon, PST, Brown Paper Tickets will post upcoming events happening in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Thursday, February 9 | SF IndieFest - Two weeks of "the best in independent, alternative, and subversive cinema from around the globe." Here's a rundown of what you can expect from the organizers:
Here's a brief example of the extreme excellent-ness of this year's program: we're showing THE FP, no doubt the best post-apocalyptic dance-fight video game movie you've ever seen; CLOWN, the most sick and wrong (and hilarious) Danish buddy film you've ever seen; BULLHEAD, Belgium's Oscar candidate for this year and probably your first introduction to Euro-backwoods crime culture.  We're showing EXLEY, the latest underground masterpiece by Canuxploitation pioneer Larry Kent. And a sweet local comedy called JUKO"S TIME MACHINE, just in time for Valentines Day.  Though, if you prefer to spend Valentines Day yelling your lungs out to classic anti-love Power Ballads, put LOVE BITES on your calendar.
Great film, fantastic parties and a roller disco? Sign us up!

Friday, February 10 | Black Choreographers Festival: Here & Now - Non-profit Art Organizations AAAPAC and K*Star*Productions have joined forces to present a comprehensive festival celebrating the diverse artistic expression within the context of African and African American dance and culture. The festival strives to offer multi-faceted programming that addresses the needs of artists: networking, mentoring, training, outreach, and the community: affordable/accessible programming, cultural enrichment and arts education. For details on performances visit the festival's website.

Friday, February 10 | The Booksmith Presents: Literary Clown Foolery! - Booze, Books, Burlesque. Welcome to the lighter side of literature. An open bar, local authors and cabaret with Circus Finelli and Tristan and Polina. Live music from Beat Feet Orchestra and Liz O. The evening's focus is Bi-Rite Market's Sam Mogannam, co-author of Eat Good Food: A Grocer's Guide to Shopping, Cooking & Creating Community Through Food.

Friday, February 10 | Love Bites - and so did the 80s - Pull out your neon sweatbands, tight roll your jeans, and buy a can of aerosol hairspray when the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco celebrates the awesomeness of the 1980s in their ninth annual cabaret and musical extravaganza. Of course, it wasn't all "Flashdance" and "Bette Davis Eyes" which LGCSF aptly demonstrates as they eviscerate love songs of a certain decadent decade."If memory doesn't serve well enough, we also have high school photos, television shows, movies and music from the 80s to remind us that this decade was severely twistedand in this show we add a few more turns of our own," said William "Billy" Sauerland, Artistic and Music Director of LGCSF. "This is really an opportunity to allow the chorus to let their hair down, or in this case tease it out and spray it up."

Monday, February 13 | Drake's Brewing at Mission Cheese - Join Mission Cheese in a celebration of love as American artisan cheese and the cheese-friendly beers of Drake's Brewing unite. It's a drop-in-anytime event featuring 5 pairing stations, each with an artisanal cheese and a unique beer from the East Bay's hottest brewery. Pairing notes will be provided by Mission Cheese and Drake's. Beer and hot!

Monday, February 13 | Sour Milk: Lacto-Fermentation from Yogurt to Soda - Lacto fermentation is an traditional way to preserve food and stay healthy. In this three-part course you will learn how lactobacillus and its other bacteria friends make some of our favorite foods: yogurt, butter, soda (?! yes) and cheese. Each class will include history, tradition, and health benefit information as well as hands-on making and recipes to go home with. February 13's class is Sour Milk -- Creme Fraiche, Mascarpone and Cultured Butter, and includes:

  • Lecture: Why fermentation--history and culture

  • Demo: creme fraiche; marscapone; cultured butter

  • Tasting: creme fraiche with berries, marscapone, cultured butter on sour baguette; non-dairy ferments.

  • Hands on: inoculate cream to make creme fraiche or marscapone

18 Reasons encourages people to sign up for all three classes. We have set a limited number of places, however, for single class attendance at each session.
