Hot Tickets: Chicago

February 01, 2012 10:00 AM

Here are this week's Hot Tickets in the Chicago area. Check back every Monday at noon, CST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Starts Thursday, February 2 I PETER PAN'S SHADOW PART ONE: NEVERLAND  Dream Theatre Company presents the first play of its season-long trilogy: PETER PAN'S SHADOW PART ONE: NEVERLAND, the world premier of a new show by Jeremy Menekseoglu. Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and Peter's younger sister set out on a harrowing adventure that will result in the birth of Neverland, the accidental creation of Peter's shadow, and the appearance of a fearsome new enemy on the horizon: Captain James Hook. "PETER, TAKE ME HOME!" says the shadow. Telling a Peter Pan story very different from those we have known, Dream Theatre probes the darker corners of Neverland and the selfish boy who forced it into being. This is the new adventure of Peter Pan and the younger sister who believed him to be dead for her entire life; after meeting him and Tinker Bell, it might have been better if that had been the case. This dark and engaging trilogy is a fairytale as only Dream Theatre could imagine it.

Starts Friday, February 3 I A Lesson Before Dying  Bayonne, LA, 1948 - Jefferson is a young black man sentenced to die for a crime he did not commit. Grant Wiggins is a local school teacher indebted to his hometown for sending him to college. When Wiggins is enlisted to teach Jefferson to face his death wit dignity, both men must re-examine what it means to be a human being. Based on the novel by Ernest J. Gaines.

Friday, February 3 I Fall in Love with Flamenco  Clinard Dance Theatre, Chicago's award-winning Flamenco arts company, invites you to an exclusive evening of local dining, live music and Flamenco dance. Featuring dance performances by Wendy Clinard and the music of Patti Ortega of Las Guitarras de EspaƱa, the evening is the perfect romantic or simply activity-filled outing for the Chicago weekend enthusiast. In addition to the acclaimed live performances, guests will be treated to delicious appetizers, cash bar and raffle, and a rare Flamenco dance instruction followed by open dancing.

Friday, February 3 I Kulturkueche - Cooking Series  WITH BAKER CAROL HIMMEL. Professional chefs guide you through schnitzel, krapfen, rouladen and potato pancakes. Krapfen are a traditional Karneval & Lenten doughnut - also known as a Berliner. These fried little delights are often filled with fruit or Nutella. Nominal class fee includes recipes, demonstration, tasting and drink. We know your Oma made it better - that was the love.

Saturday, February 4 I El Circo Cheapo Cabaret  Here we go! It's time for the next installment of El Circo Cheapo Cabaret--Chicago's greatest cheap date-recession-busting idea. For only $10-15 dollars you can see people hang from fragile looking things from their toes, ladies shake their hips, crazy people walk on glass and more! You never know what you'll get at the cabaret...you might see 5 silks acts from 5 different companies, or you might see a 6-year-old Russian trapeze artist, or an inner-city juggling superstar from the Chicago Youth Circus, or someone trying their act in front of an audience for the first time and asking for feedback, or someone who has done their act so many times they're going to try it blindfolded this time. Who knows, but for less than $17, you can't beat it!

Sunday, February 5 I The Ultimate Superbowl Tailgate Party!  Tailgating and football just go together, but when the winter temperatures in Chicago do their thing, it's unlikely that you'll be getting your grill on in some parking lot. So, join Burger Bar Chicago. They're hosting The Ultimate Tailgate on Super Bowl Sunday. For $30, you and your pals can spend the afternoon tucking into the ultimate Tailgate spread: the chili, the brats, the burgers, the wings...they're going to have it all so that you can enjoy the big game in classic Superbowl style.
