Hot Tickets: Boston

January 19, 2012 11:15 AM

Here are this week's Hot Tickets in the Boston area. Check back every Thursday at noon, EST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Friday, January 20 I An Evening with Fellswater  Fellswater plays a wide range of Celtic music from Traditional to modern compositions, and draw from the heritage of all the Celtic nations, especially Scotland, Ireland, Brittany and Cape Breton. Their instrumentation changes depending on the musical selection and includes whistle, Irish flute, guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, violin, smallpipes and border pipes.

Starting Friday, January 20 I Fen  "You need to plunge in. What else are you going to do?" Nell wants a level playing field. Angela wants to escape. And Val wants more. Set in England's Fen Country, this gripping work by Caryl Churchill interrogates the life of longing. A community of working-class women, each fighting to carve her way in life, teeter between selfless adherence to duty and self-abnegation. In a time and place where roles are prescribed and fixed and power is ascribed to the few, four generations of women battle for fulfillment and survival. A play about longing to be other than and far from where you are. Winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn prize.

Saturday, January 21 I Antje Duvekot  Antje Duvekot has solidified her reputation as one of Boston's top singer songwriters with "Big Dream Boulevard" her debut studio release and "The Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer" her follow-up CD. The debut CD was produced by Seamus Egan, founder of the Irish super group, SOLAS and released on acclaimed songwriter Ellis Paul's label, Black Wolf Records. It quickly attracted international attention for Antje. It was voted "#1 Folk Release of 2006" by the Boston Globe and was named to the "Top10 Releases of the Year" by National Public Radio's, "Folk Alley." Her follow up album "The Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer" was produced by Richard Shindell and features other "folk royalty" such as John Gorka, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. It was voted #1 album of the year 2009 by WUMB 91.9 fm in Boston.

Starts Saturday, January 21 I A Number  "How far has this thing gone, how many of these things are there?" What defines us? Nature? Nurture? What is it that makes us us? From the innovative mind of Caryl Churchill comes "A Number," an emotional shockwave of a play that examines both the complicated bonds of the father/son relationship and the implications of cloning at the most human and personal level. A much-loved son discovers that he is merely one of "a number" of genetically identical counterparts and confronts his father with the knowledge - and the desire to know if he is the original. From this confrontation stems a profound examination not only of the impact of science on our morality but on the very nature and substance of love. "What a tremendous play this is, moving, thought-provoking, and dramatically thrilling." ~The Telegraph

Monday, January 23 and Tuesday, January 24 I Burns Night at The Haven  The Haven, Boston's only Scottish establishment, is proud to celebrate the legacy of Scotland's favorite Bard Robert Burns. This great night will include a welcome cocktail, the piping in of the Haggis, traditional Scottish dancing from Boston Highlanders dance troupe, Piper James Costello, Burns songs performed by Kirsten Cairns, over 20 Scottish craft beers available and 3 course award winning Scottish food - all under one roof at The Haven in Jamaica Plain.
Last year's event was expanded to three nights - so this will sell out fast!
