Here are this week's hot tickets in the San Francisco area. Check back every Tuesday at noon, PST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.
Wednesday, January 11 I Underground Sound When's the last time a new music series opened in San Francisco? How about a new series that occurs in a theater and is devoted to popular music? And rock. And World music and classical music, individuals, ensembles, acoustic, electric--though mostly acoustic cause the theater contains only 70 seats. Even if you're in the last row (which would be row 8), you're not all that far from the performers. It's essentially an intimate concert hall. This week's performance features: Kato-Vento Brazilian Music Project, Joe Klocek and Tom Sway.
Thursday, January 12 I Souls of Splendor San Francisco Premiere Screening "Souls of Splendor" features the story of Leo, a black, gay comic book store clerk and writer who is dealing with his own complicated relationship to his art. He feels left behind by his ex-boyfriend Joe (a successful white artist) and creatively stuck in a place of self-sabotage and distraction. Although steeped in the worlds of comic geeks and San Francisco gay culture, Leo feels alienated from both. He finds the success of others unfair but can not seem to budge himself out of his creative rut. When he sits down to write, distractions abound in the form of video games and his alter-egos: a straight, white superhero named Captain Fabulous and Franz Kafka (yes, THE Franz Kafka) who argue with him and offer little solace. After an overdue confrontation with his ex-boyfriend, Leo realized that metamorphosis comes from within and has nothing to do with fairness or luck.
Friday, January 13 I Electric Symphony A night of Electro, House and EDM starring: Comic Strips and The Box Cutters. In a short time, Comic Strips has been featured on over ten releases on Beatport in just five months. Friday, January 13 - Sunday, January 15 I Becoming Julia Morgan (Sausalito Woman's Club) Back by popular demand! "Becoming Julia Morgan" played to sold out houses last fall, and returns at Julia Morgan-designed buildings in Berkeley and Sausalito. "Becoming Julia Morgan" follows the life of this Bay Area icon over a six-year period, 1931 to 1937, as she works on San Simeon, runs a busy San Francisco office with a large staff, and surmounts a medical crisis and her fear that she may have been too successful at keeping a low profile. There are flashbacks to her student days at UC Berkeley and in Paris, and a flash forward to today.
