Hot Tickets: New York

December 23, 2011 9:00 AM

Here are this week's Hot Tickets in the New York area. Check back every Friday at noon, EST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

TONIGHT! Thursday, December 22 I Bing Faithful's Very Merry Nondenominational Holiday Special  Veteran improviser Bob Kulhan (Second City, The Scene, founding member Baby Wants Candy) is Bing Faithful, a holiday crooner with a dark twist. The show also features many great, surprise guests from SNL, SC, BWC & The PIT! Moment's before he is to take the stage with his band, The Bing Faithful 5, holiday crooner Bing Faithful learns all members of his band have died in a horrific bus accident on the way to the The PIT. Yet, Bing is a consummate professional and knows "the show must go on!" at all costs. What follows is one character's journey through grief and agony as, alone on stage, he attempts to compensate for the bands absence by singing all 5 parts and harmonies to all the classic holiday songs, requested by the audience... and occasionally with the audience's help!

Friday, December 23 I TOM PACHECO with JIM WEIDER, special guest Jasha Woodall  Tom Pacheco's songs have been covered by Jefferson Starship, the Band, Rick Danko, Ritchie Havens, Scott Petito & Leslie Ritter, John Hall and dozens of European artists, many becoming number one hits in England and Norway. Pacheco's own albums have also sold well in Europe -- one became platinum in the mid '90s. He played folk rock in Greenwich Village, NY in the late '60s and alternative country in Austin Texas in the early '80s. He walked out on the Nashville songwriting factories and spent 10 years in Dublin Ireland recording and touring extensively in Europe. He now lives in Woodstock, NY, and tours both America and Europe. He is admired by critics, fellow performers and perceptive music lovers who have bought the imported copies of many of his albums. Andy Hardin, Tom Russell's long time guitarist, called him "the best solo performer I've ever seen."

Friday, December 23 I YOU'VE GOT HATE MAIL - with Guest Star RICHARD KIND Now in it's SECOND SMASH YEAR, "You've Got Hate Mail" takes a hilarious look at the world of on-line hook-ups and break-ups! In "You've Got Hate Mail," love "bytes" all when an extra-marital affair goes hysterically wrong, thanks to a juicy e-mail left sitting on a desktop. Called "the masters of modern farce" by The New York Times, the team of Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore are among the most produced playwrights in the world for over three decades. A hilarious broadband comedy of errors, "You've Got Hate Mail" is Van Zandt and Milmore's comic answer to A.R. Gurney's "Love Letters." The story is told entirely in e-mails from laptop computers, although the play still manages to have an unforgettable chase scene - thanks to Blackberries and SideKicks. The heartiest laugh-for-laugh show of all the Van Zandt-Milmore comedies.

Sunday, December 25 I Green Flash Beer Christmas/Hanukkah Dinner  It's holiday dinner for friends of craft beer and friends of Jimmy's No. 43. Green Flash Brewing Company owners Mike and Lisa Hinkley, who won't be in their San Diego home for the holidays, are hosting a traditional holiday meal along with their brewer, Chuck Silva. For others far from home (whether literally or figuratively), this is the perfect chance to share an affordable family meal in celebration of Christmas and Hanukkah (Chriskah? Hannumas?). Roasted meats, root veggies and sides, lots of pie. Green Flash beers and a selection of wine will be available for purchase.

Tuesday, December 27 I The Rolling Stones  Some Rolling Stones fans may have long forgotten Mick Taylor, the guitarist who was asked to join the band in 1969, shortly before Brian Jones died. Taylor left the band in 1975 to be replaced by Ron Wood. However, Taylor's tenure with the band also marked the group's live zenith (captured on the 1970 live album "Get Yer Ya-Yas Out!"). In addition, two of the studio albums he was part of as a full-fledged member of the group, "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile On Main Street," are among the best albums the group ever recorded. Taylor joined the group at the age of 19, after leaving England's seminal blues band John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, a band he joined at the age of 17, replacing the departed Peter Green. Clips from the Mick Taylor years will include many intimate performances from London's famed Marquee Club in 1971 that have never been commercially released, as well as extensive footage from unreleased live Canadian performances from the group's infamous 1972 tour. There will also be rare studio performances, a long-lost television commercial, promotional clips, rehearsal footage, interviews, outtakes from Rolin Binzer's "Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones" and Robert Frank's banned Stones film and a surprise finale with a very special guest. Other clips include music from the free live memorial concert at Hyde Park in England for Brian Jones, which was Taylor's live debut with the group. The second "Rock Legends Live!" Rolling Stones night will far surpass the long talked about Brian Jones night and should not be missed. Steve Matteo is the author of "Dylan" and "Let It Be" and has written for such publications as Rolling Stone, Newsday and the New York Times.
