Hot Tickets: San Francisco

December 13, 2011 12:00 PM
Every Tuesday at noon, PST, Brown Paper Tickets will post upcoming events happening in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

TOMORROW, December 14 | NOIR CITY XMAS 2011: Join Noir City at San Francisco's historic Castro Theatre for the second annual NOIR CITY XMAS, as the Film Noir Foundation offers a double-feature of rare noir-stained yuletide classics to darken your spirits this holiday season: Lady on a Train and Christmas Holiday. The evening will also feature the unveiling of the full schedule for NOIR CITY X, the 10th anniversary of the world's most popular film noir festival, coming to the Castro Theatre January 20-29, 2012.

Thursday, December 8 | Becoming Julia Morgan: Becoming Julia Morgan follows the life of this Bay Area icon over a six-year period, 1931 to 1937, as she works on San Simeon, runs a busy San Francisco office with a large staff, and surmounts a medical crisis and her fear that she may have been too successful at keeping a low profile. There are flashbacks to her student days at UC Berkeley and in Paris, and a flash forward to today. Julia Morgan was born in 1872 (just seven years after the end of the Civil War), growing up in a large family in the burgeoning city of Oakland during the final decades of the Victorian era.  A tiny woman with a big ambitionto become an architect when there were virtually no female role models to show the way Morgan overcame the social barriers of her day to become California's first licensed woman architect.

Friday, December 16 | Cut The Crap with Clam Lynch, Semi-Motivational Guru: Do you want to change your life, but you don't know where to begin? Are you ready to realize your own "special specialness?" Is it time to set achievable goals (like getting out of bed)? Clam is here and ready to lead you on this important journey. Clam Lynch will help you make enormous strides in personal growth and self-discovery without any of the annoying pain and hard work. Whether you've been sleeping under a bridge downtown or in the back seat of your Mercedes S350, Clam understands your situation, and he's an authority on relieving the burden of excess cash overflow. Or underflow! Or whatever!

Saturday, December 17 | 915 Cayuga Winter Wonderland Holiday Soiree Extravaganza: Fans of 915 Cayuga and the Brava Theater rejoice! 915 Cayuga's Winter Wonderland Holiday Soiree Extravaganza episode will be taping live at the Mission's beautiful Brava Theater. What can you expect to see in the show? Well, just funny jokes, silly stories, witty banter, incredible fake commercials, fancy dancing, improvised call-in advice segments, mind-bending political commentary, super cool Foley effects, and toe-tapping live music, all taped in front of a live studio audience (you)!

Sunday, December 18 | DIY Holidays: The Latke Who Wouldn't Stop Screaming: Join 18 Reasons for a kids cooking class, gift-making workshop, and reading of the fabulous McSweeney's book by Lemoney Snicket and Lisa Brown: The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming.  Leah Rosenberg, artist and pastry chef, will lead everyone through the essentials of making awesome latkes with creme fraiche. Kids will then assemble and decorate "latke kits" that they will go home with to give away as presents. Then, over a latke snack, Lisa Brown will read The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming and offer up some wise holiday wisdom, of the McSweeney's variety.
