|Final Home Game and One More Chance to Play in the Championship
by: Micki Dagger
The San Diego Derby Dolls and Los Angeles Derby Dolls meet again on the banked track in Del Mar, Saturday, November 5th as the Swarm takes on Fight Crew. Both the Swarm and Fight Crew have 2-1 records this season and the team that wins on November 5th heads to the Derby Doll Championship in Los Angeles to play for the trophy.
San Diego Derby Dolls was founded in 2005, but did not play as part of the regular banked track Derby Doll Season (which includes both San Diego and Los Angeles) until the Swarm hit the banked track in 2009. The Swarm fought their way to the championship bout in 2009 and 2010, but has never claimed the title, and the Swarm wants to bring home the trophy.
But this game is about more than the possibility of a single year championship title. This bout is the last time the Swarm will be able to compete for the Derby Doll Championship due to the intraleague restructuring next season.
"This is a very important game for both teams," Swarm Captain OB Noxious said. "But it's even more crucial for the Swarm as this is our last year to fight for the trophy. In 2012 the Swarm will no longer be in the intraleague rounds for champs, so we are aware of the circumstances and excited for the challenge."
This game is also founding member and first captain of the Swarm, Isabelle Ringer's, last home game before her roller derby retirement. Isabelle will remain the General Manager of the San Diego Derby Dolls, but will be bouting for the last time at home in this game.
With so much at stake, this game will bring physical, strategic and emotional battles, which the Swarm is ready for and looking forward to.
"Fight Crew is a talented and fun team so regardless of the winner, it should be a great bout for everyone," OB Noxious said. "The Swarm has worked their butts off all year and I am extremely proud of their level of sportsmanship and athleticism."
Before the Swarm takes on Fight Crew, support the Derby Dolls of the future! The San Diego Derby Dolls' Junior League, affectionately known as the Juvenile Dollinquents, will be playing a thirty minute bout (two fifteen minute periods) directly before the Swarm game. The Juvenile Dollinquents range in age from 8-17, are trained by San Diego Derby Doll coaches and play both banked and flat track roller derby.
The bout will be held in Wyland Hall, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds located at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar, CA. Tickets are available at www.derbydolls.com or at the door if they haven't sold out. General admission/standing room is $15; bleacher seating is $20. Military, seniors and children 6-12 are $13. Children under 6 are free. The doors open at 5 p.m. The game starts at 7:15 p.m. Parking is $9 in cash. This is an all-ages family event with a full bar for those over 21. There will be raffle prizes, half-time entertainment, food, vendors and 1,500 cheering fans.
