Hot Tickets: Los Angeles

October 10, 2011 12:01 PM

Every Monday at noon, PST, Brown Paper Tickets will post upcoming events happening in the Los Angeles area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

TONIGHT! The Swell Season:  The world fell in love with Glen Hansard and Mark√©ta Irglov√° when their songwriting collaboration in the film Once culminated in a jubilant Oscar win. But behind the scenes, where Glen and Mar's on-screen romance became reality, a grueling two-year world tour threatens to fracture their fated bond. Gorgeously filmed in black and white, this music-filled documentary is an intimate look at the exhilaration and turmoil created by both love and fame.

Wednesday, October 12 | Oh, Yes She Did! From Slave-Ship To Space-Ship, a one-woman show by Sandy Brown: Come time travel as dynamic actress/comedienne Sandy Brown's historical One-Woman show "Oh, Yes She Did!" blazes the stage, breathing to life powerful legacies of bold Black women pioneers whose triumphs over challenges changed the course of American history through the centuries.

Friday, October 14 | Pulp Shakespeare: "Pulp Shakespeare" (or "A Slurry Tale") is a reimagining of the cult film Pulp Fiction as if written by William Shakespeare.
Set in Elizabethan England, this wildly entertaining play weaves the story of a pair of murderers, their boss's alluring wife, and a desperate knight.

Sunday, October 16 | Larry-Thon!: A Larry Cohen marathon! Featuring The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover, Q: The Winged Serpent and It's Alive.

Sunday, October 16 | Industry Town: The Avant-Garde and Hollywood: Los Angeles Filmforum continues their film screening series Alternative Projections: Experimental Film in Los Angeles, 1945-1980 with Industry Town: The Avant-Garde and Hollywood. Many experimental works have explicitly played with the dominant film industry (Hollywood and beyond), parodying its forms or structures of manufacture or utilizing images from classic and not-so-classic films as the raw material for new creations.
