Hot Tickets: Chicago

September 28, 2011 10:00 AM

Every Wednesday at noon, CST, Brown Paper Tickets posts upcoming events happening in the Chicago area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike. Know of any other events happening in the Chicago area this week? Post them in the comments section.

Starts Thursday, September 29 - Brand An ice church. A great cleft in the rock. A spot where drifting snow and ice have formed the roof of a huge vault. A feral child leads you up a mountain to the top. A priest:  pious, passionate, conflicted. Chicago's leading avant-garde director, Max Truax, helms Henrik Ibsen's obscure epic "Brand." Old Testament rage battles modern complacence when a furious priest attempts to reform a small town steeped in corruption. When the town gives Brand the pulpit he desires, his ideals prove his undoing. Time Out Chicago hails Truax as "one of the most visually visionary directors in Chicago's storefront scene". Don't miss your chance to see him team up with the Chicago's most ambitious theatre company. Awake now?

Friday, September 30 - La Catrina Fashion Show: Cultura meets Couture  Imagine a runway where culture meets couture, where Frida Kahlo, Día de Muertos and Mexican culture are the inspiration for fashion and design. The National Museum of Mexican Art is proud to present the first ever La Catrina Fashion Show, a showcase of designs by some of Chicago's leading fashion designers, who also happen to be Mexican.

Friday, September 30 - "Immediate Gratification"  Chicago Dance Crash hands over the director's chair to Paul Christiano as he brings some powerful friends along with him to elaborate on the bet he won in 2010 with artistic director Mark Hackman concerning the attention spans of modern day America. Come join Paul as he pushes the limits as to how far contemporary dance can go to accommodate the DirecTV generation while still being, technically, "good art." Prepare yourself for a fast-paced evening of choreography specifically conceived to make sure NO ONE will possibly be bored. Guest choreography will also be featured from Harrison McEldowney and Jeffrey Hancock."

Saturday, October 1 - El Circo Cheapo Cabaret Aloft is welcoming interested circus artists to come share their stage. The main purpose of this show is purely one of self-interest; good performance footage of a circus act is awfully hard to come by. By having a cheap show they can get a fun supportive audience in to clap and cheer as they film their acts to use for promoting themselves to agents and clients. You never know what you'll get at the cabaret...you might see 5 silks acts from 5 different companies, or you might see a 6-year-old Russian trapeze artist, or an inner-city juggling superstar from the Chicago Youth Circus, or someone trying their act in front of an audience for the first time and asking for feedback, or someone who has done their act so many times they're going to try it blindfolded this time. Who knows, but for less than $17, you can't beat it!

Sunday, October 2 - AIWF Wine Auction  Join the American Institute of Wine & Food for an afternoon of great wine supporting scholarships for Kendall College School of Culinary Arts students. Sip champagne and savor hors d'oeuvres while you bid on over 40 silent auction lots or private tastings and travel packages during the live auction--all tax deductible!
