Hot Tickets: Seattle

September 22, 2011 12:00 PM

Every Thursday at noon, PST, Brown Paper Tickets posts upcoming events happening in the Seattle area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Friday, September 23 Hillstomp, I Can Lick Any SOB, Lonesome Shack High Dive presents a killer bill of the best punk-influenced Americana in the Northwest. Hillstomp's music draws heavily from north Mississippi trance blues, a bit from Appalachia and burns with the energy of punkabilly. Portland's I Can Lick Any SOB's heady mix of Americana and punk is reminiscent of Robbie Robertson and the Band and Neil Young and Crazy Horse partying with Black Flag. And local heroes Lonesome Shack's music shows the influence of post war hill country blues and rural electric blues and gospel but maintains a voice all it's own.

Friday, September 23 to Thursday, September 29 Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure Ten years ago a 3-minute film appeared called Shut Up Lil' Man, described as "A series of disturbing conversations recorded from real-life alcoholic neighbors and re-enacted by Muppets from hell." That short was just the tip of the iceberg. The phenomenon actually began in 1987, when two young punks moved from the Midwest to a cheap flat in San Francisco and ended up next door to Peter Haskett, a flamboyant gay man, and Raymond Huffman, a raging homophobe. This ultimate odd couple hated each other with raging abandon, and their alcohol-fueled rants terrorized the boys. Fearing for their lives, they began to tape record the insane goings-on. In recording Pete and Ray's bizarre dialogues, they accidentally created one of the world's first "viral" pop-culture sensations, with the tapes inspiring a cult following, stage-plays, CDs, comic art, music, and a Hollywood feeding frenzy. Exploring the blurred boundaries between privacy, art, and exploitation, Northwest Film Forum is proud to present "Shut Up Little Man," a darkly hilarious modern fable and a truly extraordinary documentary.

Saturday, September 24 School of Rock Presents: West Coast Punk The School of Rock kids present their tribute to bands such as Green Day, Bad Religion, Jawbreaker, NOFX, Social Distortion and many more! This is an early, all-ages show at Chop Suey so music starts at 5:30pm.

Sunday, September 25 Penthouse Symposium No. 13: Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky DJ Spooky sits down to discuss his new book The Book of ICE which as been called "a beautiful, category-shattering hip-hop journey back from the end of the world, one that summons the hope to turn apocalypse into possibility. Groundbreaking and moving" by Jeff Chang, author of Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History Of The Hip-Hop Generation. The night will include music and video performances and tickets include a copy of The Book of ICE.

Monday, September 26 Women in Wine Celebrate the second out of three Women in Wine Events in the beautiful Georgian Restaurant at The Fairmont Olympic Hotel. The event will feature 5 exceptional wineries including:  Gilbert Cellars, Challenger Ridge, Betz Family Winery, Delille Cellars and Stoller Vineyards complete with food pairings from Executive Chef Gavin Stephenson and artisan cheese from the Cheese Cellar. 10% of ticket sales will be donated to The Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Foundation.
