Hot Tickets: Boston

September 22, 2011 9:00 AM

Every Thursday at noon, EST, Brown Paper Tickets posts upcoming events happening in the Boston area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

TONIGHT! Ronnie Cox Gallery Concert "In Hollywood, they say it takes smart actors to play stupid characters, and nice guys to play nasty villains. Cox is the poster-boy for the latter point. He played slithery corporate snakes in "RoboCop" and "Total Recall;" but as a singer-songwriter, he is a study in easygoing amiability and unforced charisma. He charms crowds with self-teasing humor, tart progressive insight, and a lulling Southwestern folk sound. His repertoire is a smart mix of witty ditties, bluesy swing tunes, heart-on-sleeve romances, and real-life anthems ('It's a cry in the night/ It's a whispered prayer/ That gets you from here to there')." Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe

Friday, September 23 Dancing Under the Stars at Seaport This Boston dancing event is for anyone who loves to dance or wants to learn! Come try out ballroom dancing and Latin dance under the stars, outdoors on a dance floor, surrounded by spectacular views of downtown Boston, the Seaport District, and Boston Harbor. The evening includes a 30-min ballroom dancing class at 7:30 to learn from some of the best Boston Tango professionals from Ballroom Dance New England. The professionals will be available for dancing tips throughout the evening. For those attendees without dance partners, ballroom dancing hosts will also be available. Well-known ballroom and Latin DJ's K&S Music will be spinning tunes during our Boston dancing event.

Friday, September 23 Paul Brady For what promises to be one of the most memorable Guest Street Sessions in the Celtic Series at WGBH's Fraser Performance Studio, the iconic Paul Brady has agreed to give a private member's concert at the Fraser Performance Studio. It would be difficult to overstate Paul Brady's importance in the world of Irish traditional and contemporary music. Citing Jerry Lee Lewis and Fats Domino among his earliest influences, Brady has been active in various parts of the music scene in Ireland and internationally since the 1960s he has been a member of traditional bands The Johnstons and Planxty before becoming known essentially as a solo performer. His seminal recording with Andy Irvine in 1975 still endures in most traditional collections as one of the top 10 recordings of all time in the genre and just recently he released his 14th CD, "Hooba Dooba." This concert will feature a wide variety of Paul's repertoire including tracks from his latest CD which has just been released in the US.

Saturday, September 24 Beacon Hill/Back Bay Food Tour Boston Food Finds conducts food tours throughout Boston and surrounding areas. Fun and food are the main ingredients in all of Boston Food Finds' tours. While tour stops are subject to change, past Beacon Hill/Back Bay food tours have started at Scampo Restaurant at the Liberty Hotel. Additional tour stops have included Savenor's Market, Beacon Hill Chocolates, Copley Square Farmers' Market, Turner Fisheries and Sweet Cupcakes.

Saturday, September 24 Please Remove Your Shoes "Please Remove Your Shoes" is a revealing documentary about broken government process. It is also an empathetic story about a half dozen public servants who try to fix it. And it is a familiar topic to all of us who have flown in the last fifteen years: the security routine at the airport, first the FAA and now the TSA. "Please Remove Your Shoes" examines the period before 9/11 and the current situation and asks the questions that make Washington squirm: "Are we really any better for all our money spent? Or is it safe to say that nothing has changed?"
