Hot Tickets: New York

September 16, 2011 9:00 AM

Every Friday at noon, EST, Brown Paper Tickets will post upcoming events happening in the New York area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Starts TONIGHT! Point of Departure "Point of Departure" follows a series of extreme characters through the absurd landscape of a post 9/11 airport terminal. Hidden baggage fees and security pat-downs merely scratch the surface of the obstacles each passenger must overcome, in order to finally depart to their chosen destination. This highly physical, multimedia production mines the dark humor of today's airport experience.  "Point of Departure" peeks into the wonder of taking flight, as the audience is taken on a joyride of modern dance, stimulating projections and breath-taking aerial feats.

Saturday, September 17 JOEY INFANTE in "BABALU" Cuban star and winner of the HOLA award (latin Tony award)Joey Infante brings his sold out performance to the Triad NYC. Show tunes, love songs and hot latin rhythms bring his audience to their feet. Joining Joey on stage is the incomparable Barry Levitt on piano, John Miller on bass, Howie Gordon on drums, and the sensational Mayra Casales on Percussion.

Saturday, September 17 Manhattan Homebrew Tour Despite New York's gnat-size apartments, NYC homebrewers refuse to let space limitations detract them from their mission: crafting some of the city's tastiest beer. On this tour, you'll venture inside the homes of three of the city's finest amateur brewers, who will display their set-ups, discuss their craft and, most importantly, open up their stash of superlative beer. This tour will take us from Midtown East, where we'll try Tom Furnari's terrific beer, to the Upper East Side, where we'll visit award-winning homebrewer Chris Weik. Finally, we'll finish at the home of Rich Buceta, the founder of New York's in-the-works SingleCut Beersmiths. It's one of your last chances to try his beers before he goes pro next year.

Sunday, September 18 BADLANDS No one makes films like Terrence Malick, and this is clear even in his astonishing 1973 debut, "Badlands". Although far less stylized than his later works like "The Tree of Life", "Days of Heaven" and "The Thin Red Line", Malick's lyrical vision is immediately felt in this haunting tale of a young couple who go on a Midwest crime spree loosely based on the 1950s Starkweather-Fugate murders. Fancying himself a rebel like James Dean, twentysomething Kit (Martin Sheen) takes off with teen baton-twirler Holly (Sissy Spacek) after shooting her father (Warren Oates) when he tries to split the pair up. Once bounty hunters discover their riverside hiding place, Kit and Holly head toward Saskatchewan, leaving dead bodies in their wake. As the law closes in, Kit basks in his new status as a momentary folk hero. Made for under $500,000 dollars, "Badlands" debuted at the 1973 New York Film Festival, along with Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets". "Badlands"' pictorial
splendor and cool yet disquieting narrative established Malick as one of the most compelling artists to come out of early-'70s Hollywood.

Tuesday, September 20 The Joy of Cheese Presents Cheese & Beer Rules! Cheese and beer pair wonderfully, in many ways, they pair better than cheese and wine, but what are the best pairings?  For instance what sort of cheeses work best with hoppy IPA's and what sort of beers match the pepper and earth of classic blues best?  Attendees will pair off six wonderful cheeses and six awesome beers brewed in New York City by Sixpoint Brewery! The discussion will center on these pairings and what are good rules of thumb for pairing grains and curds. Then the aftermath can't be beat: open bar on all of the Sixpoint beer!!
