Hot Tickets: New York

August 19, 2011 9:00 AM
Every Friday at noon, EST, Brown Paper Tickets will post upcoming events happening in the New York area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Saturday, August 20 The Art of Brooklyn: The Art of Brooklyn was started in 2011 as the first festival to bring "old" and "new" Brooklyn together and  create an ongoing conversation between the new Brooklyn-based art community, the Brooklyn of immigrants and transplants, and the Brooklyn of those who were born and raised here. The Art of Brooklyn celebrates the creative energy that as always made the borough one of the most exciting places in the world while embracing artists from all over New York City.

Saturday, August 20 After School Special: Starfish. Well, Staples is officially having a sale on Miley Cyrus Trapper Keepers. So you know what that's the end of summer. Spend the final summer hours wisely by joining Starfish for some improv so good, all the kids will be gossiping about it. Or you can stay home and finish your "summer reading".

Sunday, August 21 Ice Cream Sunday, A Fundraiser to Benefit New Amsterdam Market: Join New Amsterdam Market and fellow Market supporters for a second annual Ice Cream Sunday, a summery, day-long event bringing together the most eclectic and seasonal ice creams from the northeast's ice cream makers.

Thursday, August 25 NOT WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR: "Not What I Signed Up For" is a live storytelling show where acclaimed writers, actors and comics -- this time, including Michael Ian Black and Andrea Martin -- tell original stories about the hysterical ups and downs of marriage.

Thursday, August 25 Yay New York! A mass reception to celebrate New York State's new Marriage Equality Bill, as well as two couples whose weddings they'll be hosting earlier in the day. Come, dance, drink, celebrate, and help raise money for Lambda Legal, the nation's oldest and largest legal organization working for the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, and people with HIV/AIDS.

Know of any other events happening in the New York area this week? Post them in the comments section.
