Michigan - Spend the Evening on the Deck of a Tall Ship with Bay Sail Tours

August 05, 2011 3:00 PM

Is there a better way to spend a summer evening than sitting on the deck of a tall ship, sipping a glass of wine and watching the sun set? I think not and if you're in Michigan, the folks at Bay Sail have got you covered.

Bay Sail was established in 1998 with the purchase of the 85 foot schooner Appledor IV, the fourth in a series of schooners that were built for world travel. Their primary mission was to provide environmental science experiences for passengers sailing on the Saginaw River and in Saginaw Bay. In 2002, Bay Sail purchased the Appledor V and in the summer months Bay Sail offers a variety of cruises in Mackinaw City and Bay City.

Tonight they have a cruise happening in both towns. Bay City Dinner Sails in Bay City offers an unforgettable evening of sailing on the Saginaw Bay with a delicious three-course dinner. They still have spots for tonight's cruise but they'll also be offering it again on Saturday, August 13 and Saturday, August 20. The other sail they're offering tonight is happening in Mackinaw City. It's the Mackinaw City Sunset Sail which is a casual sail that allows attendees to relax on the deck and enjoy a tour of the Straits of Mackinac during the beautiful sunset hours. Guests are encouraged to bring a bottle of wine and to grab a cozy spot for this romantic sunset cruise. These are happening every weekend until early September so be sure to get out there before the weather turns.

Bay Sails offers a variety of cruises throughout August from informative historical cruises to day sails to moonlight dinner sails and all of them can be found on their producer page or at their website. They deserve your support. In 2002 they were awarded the "Sea Education Program of the Year" award at the American Sail Training Association conference for "significantly contributing to the educational credibility of programs under sail." They are also currently involved in a capital campaign to raise 1.65 million dollars for the construction of an environmental education center on the Saginaw River which would be the first of its kind in the Great Lakes region.

So, you can support nautical education and research while relaxing on the deck of a beautiful vessel with a bottle of wine? Yes you can, and if you're in Michigan or visiting soon, I can't think of a better way to spend a summer evening.
