Hot Tickets: Seattle

July 07, 2011 12:00 PM

Every Thursday at noon, PST, Brown Paper Tickets will post upcoming events happening in the Seattle area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Thursday, June 7 The Dead Kenny G's If the moniker for the combustible punk jazz trio The Dead Kenny Gs doesn't say it all upon initial glance, a first listen to their new album "Operation Long Leash" quickly makes their intentions clear. Saxophonist Skerik, bassist Brad Houser and drummer/percussionist Mike Dillon are committed to musical subversion of the highest order. Exploring a muso obsession of musical styles and sonic colors, The Dead Kenny Gs have both the courage and the chops to realize their wildest aural fantasies. One moment they draw inspiration from punk legends The Minutemen, the next finds them embracing the spirit of jazz giant Rahsaan Roland Kirk and yet another finds the influence of indie rock progenitors Deerhoof; all the while sounding purely DKGs.

Tuesday, July 12 Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence From Africa to Latin America to Asia to North America, how is climate change fueling conflict? What impacts do rising sea levels, intensifying droughts, increasing floods, and melting glaciers have on access to water and arable land and how will these impacts shape future social dynamics and geopolitics? The World Affairs Council presents Christian Parenti, author of "Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence." As both a scholar and investigative journalist, Parenti will discuss the connection between climate change and increased social and political conflict.

Wednesday, July 13 Kymani Marley & Gramps Morgan Ky-Mani is a fitting name for a charismatic artist whose East African name means "adventurous traveler." Born on February 26, 1976, Ky-Mani Marley is the son of Bob Marley and table tennis champion Anita Belnavis. Born in Falmouth, Trelawney, Jamaica and settling in Miami, Florida at the age of seven. Remaining true to his Jamaican culture, Ky-Mani's fondness for all genres of music influences the work he creates. He is an artist with no limits. Incorporating world music, hip hop, blues, rock and a grass roots sound into his music, the end product is the pure representation of life for Ky-Mani. His sound is one that transcends cultural lines and prohibits him from being categorized as only a reggae artist.
