Hot Tickets: Seattle

May 26, 2011 12:00 PM

Every Thursday at noon Brown Paper Tickets will post upcoming events happening in Seattle. Here are hot tickets coming up next week. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Friday, May 27 Betsy Olsen, Tony Kevin Jr. and Pipsisewah Betsy Olson is a Montana-bred, Seattle-based artist who released her first full-length album entitled "Lonely Woman Blues" in October of 2009. Olson pulls from a wide range of influences, ranging from the classic sounds of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix to the more modern gritty and soulful sounds of The Black Keys and The Gossip. Her live performance is a two-piece (guitar, vocals, drums). With this spare instrumentation she is able to create an energy and electricity that a full band might produce.

Saturday, May 28 Jen Kirkman Official CD Release at Re-Bar Jen Kirkman is a stand-up comedian, television writer and actress. Most recently Jen was a staff writer for "Perfect Couples" on NBC. Before that she was a writer/actor on E!'s "Chelsea Lately." She currently appears now as a round-table regular on "Chelsea Lately." Jen also was the narrator of HBO's "Drunk History" which received the Jury Prize for "Best Short Film" at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010. Jen has performed comedy all over the world and some of her television appearances include spots on: "The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson", "Late Friday" on NBC, Comedy Central's "Premium Blend", The BBC UK's "The World Stands Up."

Saturday, May 28 Scott Law & The Bee Eaters Banjo wizard Tony Trischka has called the Bee Eaters "bodaciously brilliant," and internationally renowned bassist Edgar Meyer says it's "a joy to hear both the exploration of this music.. and the emphasis on the simple beauty of the acoustic instruments." The Bee Eaters trace their roots back to musical traditions as diverse as bluegrass, Celtic, jazz and old-time. While today's new breed often produces an amalgamation of sounds and styles based on a distant view, the Bee Eaters were raised embedded in these traditions raised to mold, meld, shape them and carry them forward, leaving their own indelible marks in the process. With a new CD set for release in spring 2011, the Bee Eaters continue to travel the country performing in clubs, concert halls and festivals, evangelists for their new American acoustic sound.

Thursday, June 2 The Skatalites The Skatalites are the premiere ska band from Jamaica. Officially formed in 1964 after playing in studios together all over Kingston, these musicians came together to perform live shows all over the island. In addition to the live shows, these musicians were the backing band for every vocalist including Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff and Toots and The Maytals to name just a few. They are the roots to the tree whose branches include rocksteady, reggae, rap, dub, punk, two-tone, 3rd wave, ska-jazz, ska-core and ragga. Now in their 46th year they continue to please crowds while spanning the globe year after year
