April is International Guitar Month and we've put together a little playlist of our favorite guitarists. It's amazing how hard it was to narrow the list down to just 20 guitarists since there are so many great ones out there but I tried to represent guitarists from a wide variety of genres that had an influential impact on a given genre.
That's why you see people like Link Wray, certainly not a super-fast picker like Les Paul but highly influential to any guitarist that likes raw, raunchy garage rock (and gotta love that pompadour). Duane Eddy perfected 50's "twang" and Steve Cropper of Booker T and the MG's pretty much invented the Memphis soul guitar sound. Then there's Johnny Ramone, no Eddie Van Halen as far as technical ability goes but every punk rocker out there has imitated that chainsaw guitar style that he perfected. I also put Prince on there who often gets forgotten as a great guitarist but check out his guitar solo on the VH1 tribute to George Harrison. Not only does it have soul and show incredible technical ability, he performs it with incomparable coolness and style. I just want to know where his guitar landed after he threw it up in the air. Hopefully not on someone's head.
Of course, this list is far from complete and feel free to comment and let us know who you think it missing. We all have a favorite guitarist.
Happy Guitar Month! Do something nice for the guitarist in your life.
