Friday is New Years Eve! Can you believe it? Have you made plans yet? I hope you're not going to sit on the couch with a Coors Light dwelling on all the bad decisions you made this year. You did that last year. I think that this year you should get out of the house and go see some killer live music and forget everything. Why not ring in this New Year with style? You deserve it. It doesn't matter if you're in Paducah, Kentucky or Olympia, Washington, we here at Brown Paper Tickets got a whole slew of killer shows to choose from. Here's three good ones that caught my eye that are, miraculously, not sold out yet.
Where's Paducah you ask? Well, Paducah is halfway between St. Louis and Nashville and they have a killer bill going on at the Paducha-McCraken County Convention Center Ballroom featuring one of the hottest live bands out of the South, The Legendary Shack Shakers. If you've never seen the Shakers, you are missing out. News of the World called them "The maddest, baddest, most outrageous band in America...a rockabilly version of the Sex Pistols." J.D. Wilkes is one of the craziest front-men out there. Imagine a hillbilly Iggy Pop and you're getting close. Robert Plant had the band open for him back in 2005 and is an avid fan....Robert freakin' Plant! Not only that, Duane Denison of the mighty Jesus Lizard is their guitarist. Need I say more? I thought not. If you're in Nashville or St. Louis, do not miss this show, but be sure to get a hotel room 'cause I envision some heavy drinking will be happening in Paducha this New Years.
Keeping it on the raunchy rock n' roll tip, 60's garage rock legends The Sonics are making a rare appearance on New Years Eve at the Capitol Theater in Olympia, Washington. These guys influenced everyone from The Cramps to Mudhoney to the White Stripes and if you're from the Pacific Northwest you know that these guys were the original "grunge" band. Just listen to "The Witch" and try to tell me that they weren't playing punk rock a good 20 years before the Ramones. Now in their 70's, they're still rockin' hard and have just released a new EP produced by legendary Sub Pop producer Jack Endino. They've been touring throughout the U.S. and Europe but have only played one reunion show in their home region since getting back together and that was way back in 2008! Tickets are going fast for this so get your tickets now before their gone and you can say you spent New Years with real live rock legends.
No one defines the sound and vibe of New Orleans more than trumpet player Kermit Ruffins. He channels the spirit of Louis Armstrong but add his own fun-loving, modern hipster vibe to everything he does. You may have seen him in HBO's hit series Treme or in front of one of his gigs grilling up some BBQ and drinking a Bud Light. Kermit is a fixture in the New Orleans jazz scene and often sits in with friends around town. I mean this guys eats and sleeps New Orleans music. He says, "The most important thing is how much I love the music. From the time I wake up in the morning, I'm just hyped for the gig late at night."
It's definitely rare to see that level of enthusiasm coming from a working musician and if you're in the Big Easy, you'd be doing yourself a favor by going down to the Blue Nile and getting a taste of what Kermit's got cookin'! Get your tickets now 'cause they'll be gone by Friday.
