CHILDREN
Imagine a Child's Capacity (ICC) - Madison, WI
www.icc-wi.org
We had the chance to interview ICC's Director and Vision Educator, Kim DuBois, to find out more about the organization. Here's what she had to say:
1. What are the Vision and Mission of ICC?
The mission of Imagine a Child's Capacity (ICC) is to empower parents and other caregivers to confidently support their children's unique set of gifts and challenges allowing them to reach their fullest potential.
2. What geographical reach does ICC have?
The Birth to Three Program serves families living within the Madison Metropolitan School District boundary area. Educational Partners serves families and school districts across the state of Wisconsin and parts of Illinois.
3. What inspired the founding of the organization?
The organization was originally started in hopes of filling the need for a place to serve children with diverse support needs from birth to adult hood.
4. Is there a particular success story that stands out in your mind?
A personal success story - there are so many. The time I most felt what a powerful impact our program can have, came from the mother of a graduate from our program. Her little girl was blind and came to us at age 2 with significant delays in all areas of development. I saw the Mom when her daughter was 4 years old and she said to me "it wasn't until I came here and worked with you that I believed anyone else could ever love my child." I think the fact that we were able to help a parent view her child in a more positive light and help her see her daughter as a child first and as a child with a disability second, is more profound than any other measure of progress or success that could ever be achieved.
5. Where will the donated money go?
Donated money will be used to expand our resource library of toys, books, assistive technology and other specialized equipment available on loan to families with children in the program.
ANIMALS
Society for Animal Rescue and Adoption - Seguin, TX
www.sarasanctuary.org
>From their website:
Society for Animal Rescue and Adoption (SARA) is a non-profit, no-kill facility which provides rehabilitation to abused or abandoned domestic and factory farm animals on its 380-acre preserve, which also serves as a refuge for wildlife. SARA was created in response to the problem of abuse and abandonment of companion animals in Central Texas. We have been in operation officially as a nonprofit organization since March of 1996. As the only sanctuary of its kind serving Austin, San Antonio and surrounding Texas communities, SARA seeks by example to illustrate the value of companion animals; and thus the irresponsibility of allowing an unending cycle of reproduction, neglect and abuse of these animals. We have not waivered from our original goal of a true no-kill policy - the animals live out their natural lives regardless of age, temperment or health.
